Press Releases

Thrilling conclusion to this year’s Formula 1®, GP2 Series and GP3 Series drivers’ championships will all climax in season-ending title deciders.

First time that the FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX will decide the winner of all three drivers’ crowns.

It’s the cliffhanging, nail-biting, too-close-to-call motorsport season finale that race fans can only dream about. But in 13 days’ at Yas Marina Circuit, it will become a reality.

Abu Dhabi will host an incredible triple header of championship title deciders when the 2016 FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX rolls into action from 25th-27th November.

With Lewis Hamilton claiming a victory at yesterday’s Brazilian Grand Prix and Nico Rosberg finishing second, it means that the FIA Formula One World Championship will officially go down to the wire.

Will Germany’s Rosberg hold onto his slender lead and join his father Keke in becoming a FIA Formula One Champion? Or will Britain’s Hamilton edge out his teammate and boyhood rival to win the title for the fourth time, a feat matched only by Sebastian Vettel, Alain Prost, Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher?

Racer goers on 26th and 27th November will also find out the identity of the GP2 Series World Champion following ten action-packed rounds of the 2016 season. Three drivers remain in the hunt for the crown with rookie Antonio Giovinazzi holding a slender lead over teammate and Red Bull protégé Pierre Gasly. Raffaele Marciello lies further back in the standings but is still in with a shot at glory. The GP2 Series has been F1®’s official support championship since it was founded back in 2005. Previous stars include Hamilton, Rosberg, and many others who have since made the jump to Formula 1®.

Completing an unbelievable title triple-header is the GP3 Series. Eight thrilling rounds has taken the title to the wire at Yas Marina Circuit on November 26th and 27th. Three drivers are still in contention: ART Grand Prix’s and Scuderia Ferrari Team development driver Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon, also from ART GP, and Trident and Ferrari Driver Academy’s Antonio Fuoco.

Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, said: “We are thrilled for the tens of thousands of fans who will join us here on race weekend. It’s one thing to experience all the sounds, sights and emotions of motorsport – it’s another to see not one but three championship deciders played out in front of your eyes. This will be an historic weekend of action and we can’t wait for it to get started. We look forward to seeing you there.”

As the last race on the F1® calendar, the FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX is no stranger to title-deciding races.

In 2010, Sebastian Vettel stormed away from pole position to take the chequered flag and win the FIA World Drivers Championship by just four points from Fernando Alonso. And in 2014, the ‘Duel in the Desert’ battle of the Mercedes drivers saw Hamilton get the win he needed to guarantee his second win at Yas Marina Circuit and his second F1® crown.
