The UAE’s best urban racers faced off on the quarter mile – going all out for the cash prizes and kudos of being crowned ‘King of the Street’

Yas Marina Circuit was front and centre of the UAE’s gritty street racing scene this weekend, as more than 50 local drivers in all manner of vehicles revved up and faced off on its purpose-built drag strip.

Over two days, the first round of Yas Super Street Challenge 2016 witnessed some epic battles for supremacy across the five entry categories: ‘4x4 Super Street SUV’; ‘Index 11.5’; ‘Index 10.5’; ‘Super Street’ and ‘Super Street – Open Category’.

Each of the four rounds will prove vital when it comes to accruing enough points over the season to be ultimately crowned ‘King of the Street’ and rule over their fellow urban racers in this ultra-competitive street challenge.

Setting out his tyre-spinning stall early and proving fastest in the ‘Open Category’ in his Nissan GTR, Saeed Ali scooped the AED15,000 top prize when he beat Khalifa Al Ali’s Nissan GTR and Mohamed Al Khowas’s Mustang, who finished in second and third respectively.

The ‘Super Street’ category honours were snatched by Hisham Salah in his Mustang, followed in second by the UAE’s Saeed Al Kayou driving the popular Nissan GTR, with Ala Al Hammou placing third in his Camaro.

One of the most interesting categories, the ‘4x4’ competition was very hard fought but ultimately Waleed Salah and his GMC prevailed on the quarter mile, leaving Sulaiman Abdulnasser and his Chevrolet Silverado in second, followed by Mohamed Alrumaithy driving his Nissan Patrol in third spot.

The ’10.5 Index’ champion in Round 1 was Mahmood Al Attar, whose Nissan GTR triumphed over Abdullah Al Felaihi’s Mercedes CLS63, with Hesham Al Khateeb’s Porsche clocking the third fastest time.

Finally, Ahmed Al Mutawa in his Mercedes E63 drove a superb series of races to snatch top spot in the ’11.5 Index’ category. Abdulrahman Abdulla clinched the runner up spot in his Nissan Tundra, with Abdulla Alkumaiti collecting a respectable third driving a Nissan Patrol.

“Yas Drag Centre was again home to a fantastic weekend of competitive street racing,” said Ali Al Beshr, Yas Marina Circuit’s Head of Sporting.

“With old rivals facing off against new entrants from around the region in the first round of four, this season promises to be even more closely fought than last year as they all fight for the ‘King of the Street’ title.

“We can’t wait for the next round in March to find out who will take one step closer to being named the ultimate urban racing champion.”
